What I Really Wanted on Mother's Day
May 12, 2021
I want to talk about this mother’s day thing today. So Mother’s Day is different when you live in a household of males only - I live with my husband and three sons. And they were struggling to cook “for me”, and struggling to get the house cleaned and I just wanted to be done with all the fuss, so I did the unthinkable - I took some 'me time’, some alone time, some writing time, some Mother’s-day-my-way time and parked myself at my office until dinner time.
Call me whatever you want. I don’t care. Mother’s Day is supposed to be about what I want - not so?
I love and care for my family - don’t get me wrong, but today, I just want to be left alone to do what I want. Is that wrong? Why am I even asking such a question? Someone remind me that I’ll feel what I feel and that is okay, please and thanks.
Does anyone out there feel that way? Is there any mother who just wants to sleep on Mother's Day, wake up to a clean house, a healthy breakfast, chicken alfredo for lunch and chocolate cheesecake for dessert? That would be my ultimate gift honestly - and to know that they cleaned up the kitchen afterwards.
I want to give myself space to be tired today. I am sure all other mothers are tired too. When I’m tired I want to be left alone. I don’t want to engage, or supervise the cooking in my honor, or wait on them to wake up so we can start the day. Nope. Happy Mother’s Day to me. It’s the one day that I don’t feel guilty about not being hands on with my family.
What memories does Mother’s day bring to you? If you’ve lost your mom, I hope that perhaps for a sliver of a moment, you are able to reminisce about her smile and her wit or her gentle spirit. If you’re not a mom, still be thankful for who you are. I know a friend who has no children, and wants no children and is happy with her life. I pray that you find peace wherever you find yourself. And for me, always looking ahead, I know that while we rest somewhat on Mother’s Day, we wake up and war for our children tomorrow. My mom has a favorite scripture out of Lamentations 2:19:
I want to believe that if we take up the mantle of a sentinel over our children, we will be consistently vigilant and alert to the ways in which they should go.
So happy Mother’s Day to you veteran mother, new mother, mother-to-be. You are a blessing! And I hope you got to spend the day your way!

Did you know that I wrote a book in 2017? I often forget to tell you guys about my novella How George Jones Saved Christmas which is available on AMAZON. Click on the image to check it out in Kindle and in paperback.
What is this novella about? The blurb is below:
Twelve-year-old Christy loves everything about Christmas in Saint Lucia: awakening to the smell of delicious beef and pork stewing on coal pots, playing dolls with her cousin Sweetie, and of course, singing along to the music of George Jones. The traditions are threatened when a quarrel breaks out between Christy’s mother, Merm, and her aunt Mabel. It’s not just a minor tiff between sisters, either: they are so angry with each other that Mabel threatens to spend Christmas with her family in a hotel, and Merm declares that her own family—Christy and her siblings—will spend Christmas Day by themselves."
