Why Most Goals Get Abandoned by March
I can’t count the number of goals that I’ve started with a deep sense of resolve, with shiny new gadgets and ambitious annual memberships, only to abandon them a couple months in.
Can you relate?
On the other hand, the goals that I HAVE accomplished have been fuelled by a deep longing for a better version of myself - a future me that means EVERYTHING to me.
Wbu? Where are you in your latest goals? We’ve just started the month of March, and according to the statistics, many people will begin to slack off and abandon their goals. This is the time when new year’s resolutions will begin to lose steam and fizzle out; when most people:
- stop working out
- stop eating clean
- stop pursuing the business goal
- stop writing their book
- stop blogging or posting consistently on social media
- stop the routine that they had started
- just. simply. stop. showing. up
So why do our goals lose steam and fizzle out anyways? For some it is a lack of consistency, for others, a lack of resources, for others, there is just no motivation or enough time.
However, underlying many of these reasons is this: I think the number one reason we abandon our goals is because we don’t have a compelling reason to begin them in the first place.
If your WHY is not important enough, or deep enough, or compelling enough, you have nothing to look forward to when the journey becomes difficult. We need to drill down on WHY we want this goal and get to a reason that will become our motivating factor.
So what are you after? A new career? Your new home? A healthy body? A new relationship? Think about who you want to be, and think about the importance of this goal, in helping you to become that. You’ll soon stop shirking, running away, ghosting, sleeping in, spending…all of those things that stand between us and our future selves.
